MwGh case 4421
Initial Impressions, arrival 6:34pm
This home is a duplex with a shared wall in the living quarters and is in a low traffic area. There was no significant clutter inside or outside the home and a curious neighbor frequently observed investigators throughout the night. Above average foot traffic in the adjoining duplex and noted a rack of horror films in the living area next to television and evidence of flies in kitchen area, most likely when doors/windows are open on warm days (only noted due to flies being sometimes attracted to non-human paranormal activity; which was not present in this residence).
Walk-through 6:38pm
Both adult residents + 2 adult guests and all 4 investigators were present for the walk-through. Residents provided full tour of the residence and a history of possible paranormal activity and showed investigators where encounters occurred. Most activity was focused in living area and kitchen with mention of other possible events occurring in child’s bedroom and garage. Residents and guests all claim to have experienced paranormal activity in the home and state that a neighbor in the unit next door committed suicide in the garage of that home and that his name was “*****”. Residents also mentioned what they claimed may be a “possible rumor” of a homicide occurring on the street at some point.
Historical Analysis
Geological survey of the land below and surrounding the home showed no evidence of minerals typically associated with residual-style paranormal activity; limestone, quartz or underground running water. The area was once inhabited by multiple Native American tribes, but the area was never recorded as being sacred ground associated with any particular tribe. Criminal reports do show one deceased person being removed from the street in past 6 years, but no name and no cause of death was noted in the initial reports we were able to obtain; there was no mention of a homicide occurring in this area (within 3 miles) in past 50 years. Police calls were also recorded from this street for domestic violence and noise complaints but no other items of significance associated with this investigation. There were no reports associated with this specific property at 625 Woody Lane, unit 1 which was constructed in July 1998 as part of a series of multi-family residences. Construction-wise, the “shared wall” of duplexes is viewed by inspectors as an ‘interior wall’ and is not required to be insulated or soundproofed in order to pass inspection in the city of Lebanon, Missouri. The wall in this residence is neither soundproofed nor insulated.
The Investigation 7:54pm
The investigation of this 2 bed, 2 bath multi-family residence (1 unit of 2) included five (5) digital voice recorders placed in every room, one (1) digital video camera placed in living area which also covered the area of concern in kitchen and main hallway and laser grid accompanied vid cam. Every room was scanned with EMF detector multiple times and Frank’s Box was utilized in living room. The investigation focused first on “debunking” the claims made by the residents. It’s important to note that debunking simply refers to seeking a logical explanation for the paranormal claims and it’s also important to note that just because a claim has been “debunked” it does NOT equal the conclusion that the claim may not have been “of paranormal origin”. During the course of the night, investigators thoroughly investigated every single room of the home including the garage and the exterior.
“Debunked” claims
While sitting in the living room, one investigator hears muted music playing which is then heard by two other investigators but only when sitting in the same place. It was discovered that the music was actually coming from the adjacent living quarters of the attached duplex but required perfect positioning to even be heard. Later, investigators hear banging sounds coming from what appears to be the back room of the residence which was discovered to be the neighbor of the adjacent living quarters in the back area of the home. We tested the claims of the cabinets slamming 3 times and found that if the cabinets are harshly closed (or not completely closed), vibrations on the floor can complete the closing of the cabinets and each single cabinet was tested and 100% of them demonstrated 3 “slams” as they completed the close. There is also a cross-draft/pressure effect that occurs with the child’s bedroom/bathroom doors. We discovered that when the child’s bedroom door and adjacent bathroom doors are half-closed, slamming the front door results in both doors slowly closing to completion on their own and the same is true when only one of the two doors is opened. Vibrations associated with doors closing in this residence AND the adjacent unit can also result in vibration of the garage door. Wind drafts also resulted in a shaking effect on the garage door which has loose-fitting wheels in the steel channels.
Scientific “evidence”
The area where the living room meets the hallway (where the doorbell is mounted to the wall) exhibits EXTREMELY high EMF. The EMF’s we were able to record in this area were present from floor level all the way to above 6 feet high and enveloped the entire area. We were not able to determine whether the high EMF was coming from the doorbell unit itself or possibly conduit inside/behind the drywall in this area; we believe the latter to be unlikely as the opposite side of the wall is the shower stall. We were getting EMF readings equivalent to those that would be emitted from a 50,000 watt radio tower. Just as a reminder, children and pets are MOST affected by high EMF and the results can be paranoia, auditory/visual hallucinations, tactile sensations and overall feeling of being “uncomfortable” with the area. Adults who are EMF sensitive may also be affected in the same ways. The kitchen area had satisfactory EMF insulation from the normal culprits….oven, microwave and GFCI outlets. Very high EMF levels can be corrected by an electrician and levels as high as we recorded can result in definite cognitive and/or emotional issues with kids and those who are EMF sensitive and have been known to lead to issues such as depression and other emotional disorders.
Upon review of camera video, we observed what (at first) appeared to be the front door opening/closing on its’ own, but upon further review of other recording sources and reviewing the time stamp, realized it was one of our own investigators entering the home not realizing the camera was active. We reviewed over 44 hours of recorded audio (from 5 recorders) and while we were able to capture vocal sounds, “bangs” and door-closing sounds/footsteps, we were not able to determine 100% whether the audio was authentic to the residence or if it was bleed-over from the shared wall of the neighboring residence. Unfortunately, when we can’t determine the source, we have to throw that possible evidence out. While standing outside the residence during a break, the investigators (at first) observed what they believed to be the exterior garage lights turning on/off on their own, but upon further investigation, realized that it was reflective light play from the street light near the house experiencing bulb/surge issues; the light would come on, dim and would flash indicating a new bulb was likely needed in this street light and this was all reflected on the exterior garage lighting.
Methods
Midwest Ghost Hunters never perform rites of prayer or uses religious symbols to attract paranormal activity. During our time in the home, we repeatedly asked “any spirits present” to let their presence be known and exhausted all attempts to get a response. As the residents had stated the use of the name “Shawn” as a trigger for possible activity, this name was used repeatedly by all investigators. The Frank’s Box was utilized in the living room and we conducted many exhaustive EVP sessions with no definitive results, only sounds which could possibly have been coming from the adjoining unit. Any spirits present in the home were commanded to leave the residents alone and to immediately stop scaring the residents, guests and especially children. The collection of horror movie dvd’s in the living room was noted and requires mentioning that in areas with high EMF (where the area already feels unwelcoming or uncomfortable) adding the psychological play of horror/paranormal movies only exaggerates these feelings.
Conclusions
The investigation of this home is officially considered “inconclusive” as we were unable to determine the EVP sounds recorded as definitively coming from this particular unit of the multi-family duplex given the uninsulated wall that is shared with the neighboring unit and we confirmed that the neighbors were home during our investigation. Keep in mind, are NOT saying that your home is void of paranormal activity, but we were unable to capture what we would consider “considerable evidence” of active paranormal activity during our time there; we totally understand that activity comes and goes and we possibly came during a down time. While we were able to debunk many of the claims, it would be irresponsible for us to claim your home is free of paranormal activity. However, we can definitively state that if activity is present in your home, it is of human, non-destructive origin and absent of “non-human” (demonic) and/or poltergeist activity signatures. All investigators felt safe and comfortable in the residence during the entire investigation and we were unable to illicit activity even with the most aggressive confrontation approaches which we’ve found successful.
In cases where we are unable to attract paranormal activity, we always offer a “second opinion” investigation. If you would like a second investigation, we have partner groups that we can contact to perform this service for you, also free of charge just to get another set of eyes/ears on the case. Midwest Ghost Hunters understand that children are involved in this case and we used the most aggressive techniques and most advanced equipment available to us in an attempt to draw this activity out. We can say with confidence that children in the home are NOT in spiritual danger, but are more than likely experiencing residual effects associated with very high EMF’s. We take cases involving children very seriously and use every technique possible to draw out spirits that may be affecting children and the good news for you all is that none of these techniques were successful and we feel very comfortable telling you that even if there is activity present, it does not pose a threat to any member of the family.
Recommendations
Our absolute first recommendation is to have an electrician investigate the extremely high EMF levels that are present where the living room/kitchen meet the hallway. Even one of our investigators started getting a headache in that area. Levels as high as these can result in a variety of what could almost be described as hallucinations…auditory and visual, even the feeling of being touched, but the most common is the feeling of “being watched” or of “not being alone” in an area. We also advise that if you continue to experience what you believe to be paranormal activity, do not engage it in conversation or “test it” (such as asking it to make itself known). Finally, we also found it important to include that the novelty phone apps that are supposed to measure “ghost energy” or record EVP’s are for entertainment purposes only and are not utilized by any group that is backed by the National Paranormal Society as we are; and they tend to further aggravate any feelings of uneasiness or discomfort due to providing “false hits”. If you would like, we can obtain some prayers used by Reverend Crabtree which you can perform in the home to help any spirits we were unable to attract to leave your home.
Thank you for allowing Midwest Ghost Hunters into your home and we will consider your case “active” and will work with any group that may investigate your home in the future! Please continue to use us as a resource if you continue to experience paranormal activity in your home and we will partner with you to help you find the answers you are looking for. You can feel free to call or text anytime regarding the activity in your home and we will continue to work with you to help make your home a place where you feel your family is safe.
